What is PCSX2?
PCSX2 emulates PlayStation 2 hardware so you can play PS2 games on a Windows PC. It adds custom resolutions and upscaling, save states, virtual memory cards and a patching system to the original console experience. This entry links to the publisher's Windows x64 installer for version 2.8.2; the project also offers a portable archive separately.
The emulator is not a substitute for the required console firmware: PCSX2 cannot play games without a BIOS, which the publisher says must be dumped from your own PS2. Hardware requirements vary substantially between games, so meeting a minimum specification does not guarantee full-speed play. Windows also requires the x64 Visual C++ runtime.
The publisher maintains Stable and Nightly builds. Stable builds are updated less frequently; Nightly builds deliver ongoing development changes and carry a greater risk of regressions. The screenshot shows the publisher's Windows setup wizard, not an installation or gameplay test performed by SoftGalaxy.
What it offers
- Run PlayStation 2 games through software emulation of the console's hardware.
- Use custom rendering resolutions and upscaling.
- Save progress with save states and virtual, shareable memory cards.
- Apply game patches through the built-in patching system.
Good to know
- A BIOS dumped from your own PlayStation 2 is required; PCSX2 cannot play games without one.
- Performance depends on the game and PC hardware; minimum specifications do not guarantee full-speed play.
- Windows requires the x64 Visual C++ runtime. Built-in video capture needs additional FFmpeg libraries.
