What is PersistentWindows?

PersistentWindows remembers where your windows belong when a display setup changes. It tracks window positions and sizes, then restores the layout for the matching monitor configuration after events such as waking the PC, reconnecting an external display or changing resolution. The publisher lists Windows 7, 10 and 11 and support for Remote Desktop sessions with multiple display configurations.

The program has no main application window: capture and restore commands live in its system-tray menu. You can save a desktop layout to disk for later restoration, or keep up to 36 snapshots per display configuration in memory. Manual snapshots also preserve window stacking order. Auto restore can be paused when you want to rearrange the desktop yourself.

This entry links to the standard 5.77 ZIP package from the publisher’s GitHub release. Extract the archive into a folder before running the application. Restoring elevated application windows requires Administrator privileges. The publisher also documents possible problems with fractional display scaling and a restore operation getting stuck when another application stops responding; this is not a guarantee that every layout will be restored.

What it offers

  • Automatically restore window positions and sizes for a matching monitor configuration.
  • Handle multiple display configurations in Remote Desktop sessions.
  • Save desktop layouts to disk for restoration after a reboot.
  • Keep up to 36 manual snapshots per display configuration, including window stacking order.
  • Pause and resume automatic restoration from the system-tray menu.

Good to know

  • Administrator privileges are required to restore windows belonging to elevated applications.
  • Fractionally scaled displays can require the publisher’s high-DPI configuration workaround.
  • Restoration can remain busy if a window being restored becomes unresponsive.
