What is Pkl?
Pkl is a configuration-as-code language for developers who need reusable configuration with type constraints. Instead of maintaining each output format separately, define data in Pkl and evaluate it into JSON, YAML, property lists or another supported format. Its validation system reports values that violate declared constraints, helping expose configuration mistakes before deployment.
The Windows download is the native amd64 command-line executable, not a graphical configuration editor or an editor plugin. The CLI evaluates modules and writes results to the console or a file; its REPL supports interactive development. For example, pkl eval -f yaml config.pkl renders a Pkl module as YAML, while the output-path option writes the result to a chosen file. IntelliJ, Visual Studio Code and Neovim integrations are separate tools. The screenshot illustrates constraint checking in the publisher's IntelliJ plugin, not a GUI bundled with this executable.
The publisher documents the native Windows build as tested on Windows Server 2022 and explicitly excludes native Windows ARM64 support. It does not establish a minimum consumer Windows version on the cited installation page. The native executable is self-contained; the separate Java executable instead needs Java 17 or higher. Choose this download for a Windows x64 command-line workflow rather than assuming it is an ARM64 build or a click-through installer.
What it offers
- Generate JSON, YAML, property lists, properties, XML and other supported configuration formats from Pkl modules.
- Declare types and validation constraints for configuration values.
- Evaluate modules to standard output or write rendered configuration to a file.
- Explore configuration interactively with the CLI's Read-Eval-Print Loop.
- Use separate editor integrations for IntelliJ, Visual Studio Code or Neovim.
Good to know
- The native Windows executable targets amd64/x64; the publisher explicitly does not support aarch64/ARM64 for Windows.
- This is a command-line tool. The pictured IntelliJ integration is a separate plugin, not a graphical interface included in the download.
- The cited installation documentation names Windows Server 2022 as a tested system but does not specify a minimum consumer Windows version.
