What is PostgreSQL?
PostgreSQL is an object-relational database for applications that need structured storage, SQL queries and transactional updates. It supports relational tables alongside JSON and JSONB data, with constraints, indexes and concurrency controls for managing shared data. Developers can extend it with custom functions and data types rather than treating the built-in feature set as a fixed boundary.
The selected Windows download is EDB's PostgreSQL 18.6 x64 EXE installer, build 5. The PostgreSQL project's Windows page links to EDB and lists the server, pgAdmin and StackBuilder among the installer components. pgAdmin provides a graphical database-management interface; StackBuilder offers additional tools and drivers. The installer supports graphical and silent installation.
Choose the package for your actual operating environment: EDB lists Windows Server 2025 and 2022 as tested platforms for PostgreSQL 18, while the download table marks Windows x86-32 as unsupported. The project expects comparable Windows desktop releases to work, but that is not an exact certification for every desktop version. PostgreSQL also extends SQL rather than promising identical syntax and behavior across database products.
The screenshot is historical: it shows the Spanish-language pgAdmin III interface managing a PostgreSQL 8.0 server connection on Windows. It illustrates an older administration workflow, not the appearance of PostgreSQL 18.6 or the bundled current pgAdmin.
What it offers
- Query relational data with SQL and store document-style values using JSON and JSONB types.
- Use primary keys, foreign keys and other constraints to enforce relationships and data rules.
- Coordinate concurrent work with transactions, savepoints and multi-version concurrency control.
- Extend the database with custom functions, data types and extensions; use built-in full-text search and multiple index types.
- Install the server with pgAdmin and StackBuilder through EDB's graphical or silent Windows installer.
Good to know
- The selected installer is for Windows x64; EDB marks Windows x86-32 packages as unsupported.
- PostgreSQL 18 installers are listed as tested on Windows Server 2025 and 2022. Comparable desktop versions are expected to run, not individually certified by that table.
- SQL compatibility is not exact across products: the publisher notes that some supported standard features have differing syntax or behavior.
