What is Processing?
Processing is a software sketchbook for making visual work with code. Its editor lets you write a sketch, run it in a display window and read messages in the console. It is aimed at learning programming through graphics as well as creating interactive artwork and visual experiments. Java mode is the default, with examples and documentation to help you get started.
Sketches can use the default 2D renderer or the P2D and P3D renderers for accelerated graphics. Libraries extend the core language with capabilities such as sound, computer vision and more advanced geometry; tools and additional programming modes are installed separately through the environment. The debugger supports breakpoints and stepping through sketch code.
The linked Processing 4.5.7 disk image is for Apple Silicon Macs; the publisher provides a separate x64 package for Intel Macs. Renderer behavior is not identical across all backends, and P2D/P3D acceleration depends on compatible OpenGL graphics. The screenshot is the publisher's annotated Processing 4.0.1 interface example, not a capture of the linked release.
What it offers
- Write and run sketches using a text editor, display window, message area and console.
- Create 2D graphics or use the P3D renderer for 3D geometry, camera controls, lighting and materials.
- Extend sketches with contributed libraries, tools and additional programming modes.
- Inspect sketch behavior with breakpoints, variable values and step-through debugging.
- Start with bundled examples and the publisher's programming tutorials.
Good to know
- This download targets Apple Silicon (aarch64), not Intel Macs; Intel users need the separate x64 package.
- The publisher documents differences between renderers; P2D and P3D acceleration requires compatible OpenGL graphics.
- Capabilities beyond the core environment may require separately installed libraries, tools or programming modes.
