What is Publish or Perish?

Publish or Perish retrieves academic publication and citation records from external services and turns them into research-impact metrics. It helps researchers examine an author's output, investigate literature and prepare evidence for promotion or performance reviews. Results include the number of papers, total citations and the h-index; records can be copied to the clipboard or saved for further analysis.

The application is an interface to external data sources, not a citation database of its own. Available services include Google Scholar, Crossref, OpenAlex and PubMed. Access conditions vary: some sources require an API key or subscription, and Google Scholar Profile searches require a Google account login. Source restrictions still apply, and the publisher does not guarantee that every service will remain available.

The linked Windows installer is the package identified on Harzing.com's Windows instructions page as version 8.19.5300, released on 17 December 2025. Softonic lists the longer version 8.19.5300.9483 with an October 2026 page update; that listing date is not treated here as a new publisher release. The screenshot is an older Windows version 7 interface supplied in Softonic's gallery, not a capture of version 8.19. The software is free for personal non-profit use under its license agreement, not unrestricted commercial use.
