What is PuTTY?
PuTTY connects your Windows PC to a remote computer's terminal over SSH or Telnet, or to equipment through a serial port. Its graphical configuration window lets you save settings for each destination, adjust terminal behavior and log session output. It suits command-line work on remote systems rather than browsing remote files in a graphical file manager.
The linked download is the Windows x64 MSI package, not the standalone putty.exe. It includes companion tools such as PSCP and PSFTP for command-line file transfers, Plink for command-line connections, Pageant for SSH authentication and PuTTYgen for key generation. ARM64 and 32-bit x86 packages are separate. Saved sessions keep connection settings, not login passwords; use SSH public-key authentication when password-free login is required.
What it offers
- Connect to remote terminals using SSH or Telnet, or open a terminal session over a serial port.
- Save per-host connection, authentication, terminal and logging settings as sessions.
- Adjust terminal behavior and configure session logging through the graphical interface.
- Use the bundled PSCP, PSFTP and Plink tools for command-line file transfers and connections.
Good to know
- Saved sessions do not remember login passwords; SSH public-key authentication is the supported alternative for password-free login.
