What is PVRTexTool?

PVRTexTool prepares texture assets for graphics applications. Use the graphical interface to inspect and manipulate textures with visual feedback, the command-line tool to batch conversions, or the C API library to integrate processing into an existing toolchain. It supports core texture formats used by Vulkan, OpenGL ES and DirectX, with output to PVR, KTX, KTX2, ASTC and DDS files.

Beyond compression, its processing tools generate mipmaps and normal maps, build cubemaps and texture arrays, and handle operations such as resizing, colour bleeding and border generation. These are asset-preparation features rather than a complete graphics-authoring workflow.

The official manual recommends Windows 10 or newer for best compatibility. The linked publisher Windows package is an MSI identified by its download headers as PVRTexToolSetup-2026_R1.msi. Its exact application version and processor architecture were not confirmed; a separate current release-notes page is not proof of what is inside this installer. Use is free under the PowerVR Tools EULA, which restricts standalone redistribution.

What it offers

  • Compress textures using formats including PVRTC, ASTC, ETC, BASISU and DXT/BC.
  • Export texture assets to PVR, KTX, KTX2, ASTC and DDS containers.
  • Inspect and manipulate textures interactively in the graphical interface.
  • Batch texture conversion and compression through the command-line tool, or integrate the C API library into a toolchain.
  • Generate mipmaps, normal maps, cubemaps and texture arrays; apply resizing, border generation and colour bleeding.

Good to know

  • The publisher recommends Windows 10 or newer for best compatibility; older Windows compatibility is not established here.
  • The PowerVR Tools EULA prohibits standalone redistribution; bundling components in an application requires its licence and attribution conditions.
  • The exact application version and CPU architecture of the linked Windows MSI have not been confirmed.
