What is QOwnNotes?

QOwnNotes is a Markdown note editor for people who want their notes stored as ordinary files on their Mac. Open an existing text or Markdown collection without importing it, edit with syntax highlighting, and check the formatted result in the preview. Tags, subfolders and highlighted search results help organize and retrieve notes.

The application can connect to Nextcloud or ownCloud for features such as shared notes and server-side note history. That integration is not file synchronization: QOwnNotes does not sync notes or attachments itself. Use a separate sync client if you want the same files on other devices.

This download is the Qt6 universal DMG for macOS 13 Ventura or later. The publisher also offers a separate Qt5 legacy build, but that build requires manual updates. The screenshot is the publisher’s cross-platform desktop example, showing version 24.7.0; it is not a capture of this macOS release.

What it offers

  • Edit existing plain-text and Markdown files without an import step.
  • Use Markdown syntax highlighting and a formatted preview.
  • Organize notes with hierarchical tags and subfolders, and search parts of words.
  • Import notes from Evernote or Joplin.
  • Customize the workspace with dockable panels, themes and scripts.

Good to know

  • Notes and attachments are not synchronized by QOwnNotes itself; cross-device file sync needs a separate client.
  • The linked Qt6 universal build requires macOS 13 Ventura or later. The separate Qt5 legacy build cannot use the internal updater.
  • The publisher warns that macOS may report an unverified developer on first launch.
