What is R?

R is a programming language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. Use it to manipulate data, calculate with matrices, run statistical tests and build models. Its plotting tools support mathematical notation, and CRAN packages extend the environment for additional analytical methods. The macOS distribution includes the R framework and R.app graphical interface.

The linked R 4.6.1 PKG is for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Intel Macs need the separate x86_64 package listed by CRAN, which supports macOS 11 Big Sur or later. The screenshot shows a historical Mac interface, not the appearance of the linked release.

Some workflows need additional components: X11-based features, including tcltk, require XQuartz, and compiling packages with Fortran code may require a matching GNU Fortran compiler. These requirements do not apply to every analysis or package.

What it offers

  • Manipulate data and perform array and matrix calculations.
  • Apply linear and nonlinear modelling, statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification and clustering.
  • Create plots with mathematical symbols and formulae.
  • Extend statistical methods through CRAN packages and user-defined functions.
  • Use the included R.app graphical interface on macOS.

Good to know

  • The linked arm64 package requires macOS 14 or later and is not the Intel installer.
  • X11-based features, including tcltk, require a separate XQuartz installation.
  • Compiling packages containing Fortran code may require an additional GNU Fortran compiler.
