What is R?

R combines a programming language with tools for statistical computing and graphics. Use it to manipulate data, calculate with matrices, run statistical tests and build plots whose labels can include mathematical symbols and formulae. Its statistical methods include linear and nonlinear modelling, time-series analysis, classification and clustering. Packages extend the environment beyond the functions supplied with R.

The Windows distribution includes Rgui, which puts an R console in a desktop window, and Rterm for terminal and batch workflows. Menus provide shortcuts for loading code, managing workspaces, installing packages and opening help; analysis itself uses R commands and functions. This is the R environment, not a separate IDE.

The linked CRAN installer is R 4.6.1 for 64-bit x86 Windows. It requires the Universal C Runtime: Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 include it, while older supported systems need it installed separately. The screenshot illustrates the Windows Rgui interface in R 4.3.2, not the linked release.

What it offers

  • Apply statistical techniques including modelling, statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification and clustering.
  • Manipulate data and perform calculations on arrays and matrices.
  • Create configurable statistical graphics with mathematical notation.
  • Extend the language and analysis tools through packages.
  • Use the Windows Rgui console or Rterm for terminal and batch operation.

Good to know

  • This installer targets 64-bit x86 Windows; it is not a 32-bit Windows build.
  • The Universal C Runtime is required and must be installed separately on older supported Windows systems.
