What is RED - Robot Editor?

RED - Robot Editor is an Eclipse-based environment for writing Robot Framework tests. Its text editor provides code coloring, validation and completion for keywords, variables, resources and libraries. Synchronized table editors offer another way to work with the same test files, while debugging tools support breakpoints, stepping and inspecting or changing runtime variables.

This download is the Windows x64 product ZIP for RED 0.9.5, released on July 24, 2020. It bundles Eclipse rather than requiring the separate RED feature to be installed into an existing Eclipse setup. The release lists Java 1.8 or later plus Python or Jython with Robot Framework as prerequisites.

The publisher states that RED is not actively developed or maintained. Treat it as a legacy tool: compatibility with current Windows and Robot Framework releases has not been verified here. It supports .robot, .txt and .tsv test formats, but not HTML. The screenshot illustrates the Windows editor interface; it is not evidence that this package was installed or tested.

What it offers

  • Edit Robot Framework test files in synchronized text and table views.
  • Use code coloring, real-time validation and completion for keywords, variables, test cases, resources and libraries.
  • Debug tests with breakpoints, stepping and runtime variable inspection or modification.
  • View test execution and extend the environment through Eclipse plug-ins.

Good to know

  • The publisher states that RED is no longer actively developed or maintained; current Windows and Robot Framework compatibility is unverified.
  • Requires Java 1.8 or later and Python or Jython with Robot Framework, according to the 0.9.5 release notes.
  • HTML test files are not supported; RED 0.9.5 also dropped support for Robot Framework 2.9.
