What is Ren'Py?
Ren'Py combines dialogue, images and sound into visual novels and other interactive stories. Its script language handles storytelling, while Python scripting supports more complex game logic. It is a development tool for making games, rather than a visual novel to play.
The launcher creates, manages, edits and runs projects. The SDK includes a tutorial and The Question example game, so creators can inspect a working story before starting their own. On Windows, the publisher's 7z.exe download extracts the SDK into a folder; the quickstart then directs users to run renpy.exe from that folder. The publisher lists Windows 10 or later.
Writing dialogue and game behavior involves editing script files, not just arranging screens visually. A text editor and support packages for Android, iOS or web distribution may require additional downloads. Ren'Py is free for commercial and non-commercial work, but distributing games still requires compliance with the included software licenses. The screenshot shows the launcher from the official documentation; its interface is not a version-specific capture of 8.5.3.
