What is RustDesk?

RustDesk lets you connect to another computer for remote support or access to your own desktop. Its Mac interface shows the local device ID and password, a remote-device connection field and recent sessions. File transfer is available alongside remote desktop control. The project supports macOS, Windows, Linux and Android, so the other device does not have to be another Mac.

You can use the project's rendezvous and relay servers or configure your own server. Self-hosting is an option, not a requirement for every connection. The client is open source under the GNU AGPL v3; that does not mean every separate server product or service is included.

On a Mac, installing the app alone is not enough for remote control. The publisher documents Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions, with Input Monitoring needed in some cases. Without the relevant permissions, screen capture or keyboard and mouse control may not work. The linked version 1.5.0 DMG is for Apple Silicon; the publisher offers a separate x86-64 DMG for Intel Macs. The screenshots illustrate an earlier Mac interface, not a verified capture of version 1.5.0.

What it offers

  • Connect to a remote computer using its device ID and access credentials.
  • Transfer files between connected devices.
  • Use public rendezvous and relay infrastructure or configure a self-hosted server.
  • Access a cross-platform remote desktop client available for macOS, Windows, Linux and Android.

Good to know

  • Remote control on macOS requires Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions; Input Monitoring may also be needed.
  • The linked Apple Silicon DMG is not the Intel Mac package; Intel users need the publisher's separate x86-64 download.
