What is Scilab?

Scilab is a free, open-source environment for numerical computation. Its high-level language and mathematical functions support scientific calculations, algorithm development, optimization, signal processing and control-system work. Use the interactive console to explore a calculation, then move repeatable commands into scripts with the SciNotes editor.

The platform includes 2D and 3D plotting and Xcos, a graphical tool for modeling and simulating hybrid dynamical systems. The desktop brings together a console, file browser, variable browser and command history. The screenshot is the publisher’s Windows-based Scilab 2024.0.0 tutorial illustration of that layout, not a capture of the current Mac release.

The linked Scilab 2027.0.0 disk image is for Apple Silicon Macs. Intel Macs require the separate x86_64 package listed on the publisher’s download page. Installing ATOMS modules requires an internet connection; compiling C/C++ or Fortran extensions requires the corresponding compiler, and Modelica use in Xcos requires a C compiler.

What it offers

  • Use a high-level programming language and mathematical functions for numerical analysis and algorithm development.
  • Create 2D and 3D graphics to visualize calculation results.
  • Work with optimization, statistics, signal processing and control-system capabilities.
  • Build and simulate hybrid dynamical-system models with the included Xcos graphical editor.
  • Explore commands in the console and edit reusable scripts in SciNotes.

Good to know

  • The linked ARM64 DMG is for Apple Silicon; Intel Macs need the separate x86_64 download.
  • ATOMS module installation needs an internet connection. Compiling external modules needs a suitable compiler; Modelica use in Xcos also requires a C compiler.
