What is SimilarImages?

SimilarImages helps locate files that show the same subject even when their file format, size or compression differs. It builds color-and-location footprints from normalized thumbnails and compares those footprints, rather than relying only on identical file bytes. Analysis results are cached on disk for reuse on subsequent runs. It suits reviewing a media collection containing multiple versions of the same pictures or videos.

The publisher still lists 2013.11 as the stable download, but describes the code base as old and says significant new features are not planned. The application is 32-bit; the publisher says it also runs on 64-bit Windows, not that a native 64-bit edition exists. Current Windows compatibility has not been independently verified here. Video processing needs the included FFThumb component or suitable codecs. The screenshot is a historical view labeled SimilarImages 2006.1, not a capture of the offered 2013.11 package.

What it offers

  • Find near-duplicate images and videos across different formats, compression levels and sizes.
  • Compare color-and-location footprints generated from normalized thumbnails.
  • Cache file-analysis results on disk for reuse in later searches.
  • Review possible duplicate images in a comparison window before deciding what to do with them.

Good to know

  • The publisher describes a legacy code base and says there will be no significant new features or native 64-bit, macOS or Linux versions.
  • Video processing depends on included FFThumb or suitable codecs; an SSE2-capable CPU is required.
  • The publisher's broad Windows requirement is not independent confirmation of compatibility with current Windows releases.
