What is Snap4Arduino?
Snap4Arduino combines the Snap! visual programming environment with hardware control. Assemble blocks to work with Arduino-compatible boards, connect more than one board to a project, and experiment with programming and electronics in the same workspace. Connected boards need Firmata firmware; installing the desktop application alone does not prepare the hardware.
The publisher lists 10.3.6, released January 8, 2025, as the last desktop version. Maintenance stopped in September 2025, and development moved to the S4A Connector library in Snap! v11. Existing Snap4Arduino projects and libraries can be used there by loading S4A Connector after the project or library. This entry links to the legacy 64-bit Windows installer ZIP, not the browser connector or a new desktop release.
The desktop edition also offers a small HTTP server for interacting with projects over a network and can translate simple scripts into Arduino sketches. Sketch translation is limited to simple scripts, rather than every Snap! project. The screenshot shows the application's custom-block dialog from the publisher team's 2015 tutorial; it is not a capture of version 10.3.6 running on Windows.
What it offers
- Create interactive programs using Snap!'s block-based, live programming environment.
- Connect Firmata-compatible boards, including Arduino UNO, Nano, Mega, Leonardo and Micro.
- Interact with multiple boards in the same project.
- Translate simple scripts into Arduino sketches.
- Use the desktop edition's built-in HTTP server to interact with projects over a network.
Good to know
- Desktop maintenance ended in September 2025; development continues in the S4A Connector library for Snap! v11.
- Connected boards require Firmata firmware before Snap4Arduino can communicate with them.
- Arduino sketch translation supports simple scripts, not arbitrary Snap! projects.
