What is SoftMaker FreeOffice?

SoftMaker FreeOffice brings three office applications to Mac: TextMaker for documents, PlanMaker for spreadsheets and Presentations for slide decks. It suits everyday writing, calculations and presentation work without a paid office-suite license. The interface can use ribbons or classic menus and toolbars.

TextMaker opens and saves Microsoft Word DOC and DOCX files and exports documents as PDF. It also provides tables, drawing tools and spell checking. The publisher lists FreeOffice 2024 revision 1238 for Macs running macOS 10.14 or later; the linked download is a PKG installer.

Some advertised features are platform-specific: importing WordPerfect documents and printing multiple document pages on one sheet are listed for Windows only, not Mac. Free use is still subject to SoftMaker's license agreement, which limits a copy to three computers in one family household or one computer belonging to an organization.

What it offers

  • Use TextMaker, PlanMaker and Presentations for documents, spreadsheets and slide decks.
  • Switch between ribbon controls and classic menus and toolbars.
  • Open and save DOC and DOCX documents in TextMaker.
  • Export TextMaker documents directly to PDF.
  • Format documents with tables, drawing tools and spell checking.

Good to know

  • TextMaker's WordPerfect import and multiple-pages-per-sheet printing are listed as Windows-only features, not Mac features.
  • The license permits one copy on up to three computers in the same family household or one computer belonging to an organization.
