What is Stella?
Stella emulates the Atari 2600 VCS on a Windows PC. Its built-in ROM launcher lets you browse a game collection, while keyboard, joystick and mouse mappings provide controls for different Atari input devices. It opens A26, BIN and ROM files, including supported ROMs stored in ZIP archives.
Save states let you resume a session, and the Time Machine feature records states so you can move backward or forward through a recorded timeline. TV-effect filters offer different display styles. For homebrew development, the integrated debugger includes disassembly and tools for inspecting emulated code.
This entry links to the publisher's Stella 7.0c x64 EXE installer for Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11. A ZIP package is listed separately by the publisher. The Visual C++ Redistributable may need to be installed manually. You need game ROM images that you are legally entitled to use; the emulator's free-software license does not grant rights to copyrighted games.
What it offers
- Browse ROM files with the built-in launcher and track favorites or recently played games.
- Load A26, BIN and ROM images, including supported files inside ZIP archives.
- Save and load emulation states; use Time Machine to navigate a recorded state timeline.
- Map Atari controllers to keyboard, joystick or mouse inputs and adjust TV-effect filters.
- Inspect homebrew code with an integrated debugger and disassembler.
Good to know
- Playing requires suitable ROM images; copyrighted games have separate usage rights. The publisher warns that using ROMs of games you do not own may be illegal.
- The Windows installer may require a separate manual installation of the Visual C++ Redistributable.
