What is Syncthing?
Syncthing keeps selected folders synchronized across two or more computers without uploading their contents to a central cloud storage account. It suits moving documents or other working files between your Windows PC and another device you control. You choose the folders and approve the devices that can connect; transfers use TLS encryption.
This entry links to the base Windows x64 distribution, not a tray utility or an installer. Unpack the ZIP and start syncthing.exe; configuration and status are available through its local browser interface. To share a folder, add each computer's device ID on the other computer and select the folders to share. Separate Windows integrations are listed on the publisher's download page.
Synchronization is not an independent backup: changes and deletions can propagate to other devices, and participating devices must be online together to exchange files. The screenshot is the publisher's getting-started illustration of the Windows web interface; it visibly shows v1.7.1 (32-bit), not the v2.1.7 x64 package linked here.
What it offers
- Synchronize selected folders between two or more computers over a local network or the Internet.
- Configure folders and monitor device status through a browser-based interface.
- Approve connections by exchanging device IDs on both computers.
- Transfer files using TLS encryption without a central cloud file store.
Good to know
- Devices must be online at the same time to exchange files; Syncthing does not provide cloud storage for offline retrieval.
- Changes and deletions propagate between synchronized devices, so synchronization alone is not an independent backup.
- Windows ACLs are not preserved, and symbolic links are not synchronized on Windows.
