What is Termux?
Termux combines an Android terminal emulator with a Linux environment for command-line work on a phone or tablet. A minimal base system is installed automatically, and APT lets you add the tools you need. Use it to edit files in Vim or nano, work with Git, run Python or connect to remote servers through OpenSSH without rooting the device.
This entry links to the upstream GitHub v0.118.3 universal APK for Android 7 and newer. It is not the separate experimental Google Play build listed by Softonic, and it is not a beta or a per-commit build artifact. The GitHub APK is a debug build signed with a publicly shared test key; obtain updates from the upstream repository rather than unrelated redistributors.
Keep Termux and its optional plugins on the same distribution source: GitHub and F-Droid signatures are not interchangeable. The upstream project also warns that Android 12 and newer can terminate background or CPU-heavy processes, so long-running command-line jobs are subject to Android's process limits.
What it offers
- Use a terminal emulator and a minimal Linux environment directly on Android without root.
- Add command-line packages through APT rather than installing a fixed bundle of tools.
- Choose shells such as Bash, fish or Zsh and editors such as nano, Emacs or Vim.
- Work with Python, Git, OpenSSH and compiler tools available through the package repositories.
- Use keyboard shortcuts, an external keyboard and mouse input for terminal work.
Good to know
- Full app and package support requires Android 7 or newer; older Android 5 and 6 builds do not receive supported package updates.
- Android 12 and newer can kill background or CPU-heavy processes; the upstream project warns of instability on these versions.
- Termux and its plugins must come from the same source because GitHub and F-Droid packages use different signing keys.
- GitHub APKs are debuggable and use a publicly shared test signing key. This download is not the separate experimental Google Play branch.
