What is TeXShop?
TeXShop is a Mac application for working on TeX and LaTeX documents and viewing the resulting PDFs. Its source-editing and preview windows let you work with document markup and its typeset output. In the default configuration it calls pdftex or pdflatex from an underlying TeX distribution to produce PDF rather than DVI output.
The separate download is the front end, not a complete typesetting system. Install a TeX distribution such as BasicTeX separately, or use MacTeX, which includes TeXShop along with TeX Live and other tools. The Help menu provides the TeXShop Manual and change history.
The publisher lists version 5.57 for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Its current-release and obtaining pages say macOS High Sierra or later, while its About page says Mojave or later; the exact minimum requirement is inconsistent in the publisher documentation. The gallery image below shows an older TeXShop interface, not a verified screenshot of version 5.57.
What it offers
- Edit TeX and LaTeX source documents in a Mac application.
- Preview PDF output alongside the document source.
- Use pdftex and pdflatex from a separate TeX distribution in the default configuration.
- Read the TeXShop Manual and change history from the Help menu.
Good to know
- Typesetting requires a separate TeX distribution; the standalone TeXShop archive is not a complete TeX system.
- Publisher pages disagree on the minimum macOS version: High Sierra on the current-release and obtaining pages, Mojave on the About page.
