What is TeXstudio?

TeXstudio is an open-source editor for creating LaTeX documents. It brings source editing, reference checking and PDF viewing into one workspace, with command completion and assistants for inserting tables, formulas and images. It is useful when you want to work directly with LaTeX source while checking the document output beside it.

The editor can call LaTeX compilers and bibliography tools, display errors and warnings, and synchronize positions between source text and the integrated PDF viewer. It does not include the LaTeX system itself: install that separately before compiling documents. The linked package is the Windows x64 EXE installer; the publisher lists separate ARM64 and portable packages.

The screenshot comes from the publisher's documentation and shows TeXstudio on Linux, illustrating the editor and PDF-preview workflow rather than the appearance of the Windows build. It is not a screenshot from an installation tested by SoftGalaxy.

What it offers

  • Edit LaTeX source with syntax highlighting, command completion and reference checking.
  • Insert tables, formulas and images with editing assistants and access mathematical symbols from a side panel.
  • View compiled PDFs inside the editor with source-to-PDF synchronization.
  • Call LaTeX compilers and bibliography tools, and inspect document errors and warnings.

Good to know

  • A LaTeX system must be installed separately; TeXstudio does not include one.
  • The publisher notes that Windows 11 requires the Visual Studio runtime.
