What is Thonny?

Thonny gives people learning Python a code editor, interactive shell and visual tools for following what a program does. Its Mac installer bundles Python 3.14, while the simplified initial layout keeps the focus on writing and running code. Open the Variables view to inspect values, or use the debugger to follow statements and smaller expression-evaluation steps.

Function calls open separate views with their own local variables, making recursive examples easier to trace. Syntax-error highlighting and code completion help while editing, and the package-management interface provides a graphical way to install third-party Python packages.

The linked Thonny 5.0.0 PKG targets Apple Silicon Macs. Intel Macs need the separate x64 package linked on the publisher homepage; this is not a universal installer. The publisher specifies macOS 10.15 Catalina or later for the version 5 installers, so older systems need a separate Python-and-Thonny installation route. When upgrading from Thonny 4, follow the publisher's recommendation to uninstall the old version first; a saved interpreter path may also need to be reselected. The source-gallery screenshots illustrate Thonny's learning tools in a Windows-style interface, not a verified capture of the current Mac release.

What it offers

  • Write Python in a simplified editor and run code in an interactive shell; the Mac installer includes Python 3.14.
  • Inspect changing values in the Variables view.
  • Step through statements and expression evaluation with the visual debugger.
  • Follow function calls in separate views with local-variable tables.
  • Use syntax-error highlighting, code completion and a graphical Python package manager.

Good to know

  • The selected PKG is for Apple Silicon; Intel Macs require the separate x64 installer.
  • Version 5 bundled installers require macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. Older macOS systems need a separate Python-and-Thonny installation route.
  • Upgrading from Thonny 4 may require selecting the new interpreter because a saved configuration can reference the old Python executable.
