What is TinyGo?

TinyGo is an alternative Go compiler for projects aimed at small devices and WebAssembly runtimes. It uses LLVM and provides target-specific build and flash commands, making it useful when you want to write Go for a supported microcontroller or produce WASM/WASI output rather than a conventional desktop application.

The Windows download is a ZIP archive, not a graphical installer. The publisher describes extracting its tinygo folder to C:\ and adding C:\tinygo\bin to PATH. A separate supported Go toolchain is required: the compatibility matrix lists Go 1.25 through 1.27 for this TinyGo series. Windows WebAssembly/WASI work also requires Binaryen, and some boards need additional flashing tools.

TinyGo is not a drop-in guarantee for every Go project. Standard-library imports can succeed even when particular functions or types remain unsupported. Check your target board and dependencies before choosing it. The screenshot shows the publisher’s allocation-report workflow in Go’s browser-based coverage viewer; it is not a native TinyGo editor.

What it offers

  • Compile Go for supported microcontrollers using an LLVM-based toolchain.
  • Produce WebAssembly for browser and WASI environments.
  • Build and flash supported boards with target-specific command-line commands.
  • Inspect heap-allocation locations through -print-allocs output and Go’s coverage viewer.

Good to know

  • Not every Go program or standard-library function is supported.
  • Requires a separate compatible Go installation; Windows WASM/WASI compilation also needs Binaryen.
  • Some boards require additional flashing utilities; this ZIP is not a one-click IDE installer.
