What is TrenchBroom?
TrenchBroom is a level editor for brush-based game engines such as Quake, Quake 2 and Hexen 2. Use it to shape level geometry, apply materials and place entities while switching between a 3D view and orthographic 2D views. It is an editing tool, not a game to play.
Brush tools cover vertex editing, clipping, scaling, shearing and constructive solid geometry operations. A UV view helps adjust textures, while the entity browser supports drag-and-drop placement and property editing. Layers and linked groups help organize maps; automatic backups and an issue browser support the editing workflow. The 2026.2 release adds a sweep tool, an arch shape and controls for creating and editing Quake 3 patches.
This entry links to the publisher's Windows x64 ZIP for version 2026.2. The release requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later, OpenGL 2.1 and GLSL 1.2-capable video hardware with current drivers, and the x64 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable specified in the release notes. Game paths and resources need configuration: without them, models or materials may be missing. The publisher documentation screenshot illustrates the shared editor interface on Ubuntu Linux; it is not a Windows capture.
What it offers
- Edit levels in 3D and in up to three orthographic 2D views.
- Shape brushes with vertex editing, clipping, scale, shear and CSG tools; adjust textures in a UV view.
- Place entities through a drag-and-drop browser and edit their properties using supported definition files.
- Organize maps with layers and linked groups, with automatic backups and an issue browser.
- Use the 2026.2 sweep tool, arch shape and Quake 3 patch control-point editing.
Good to know
- The Windows release is x64-only and requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later, compatible OpenGL 2.1/GLSL 1.2 graphics and the specified Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Game paths and resources must be configured; missing game resources can leave entity models and materials unavailable in the editor.
