Utilities macOS
UTM for macOS
Run Windows, Linux and other operating systems in virtual machines on your Mac with UTM, a free, open-source app built on QEMU and Apple Virtualization.
What is UTM?
UTM hosts virtual machines in a native Mac interface. Use it to run another operating system alongside macOS, keep separate development environments or emulate older computers. It combines QEMU emulation with Apple virtualization technologies, and its library keeps virtual machines and their settings together. On Apple Silicon, it can virtualize ARM64 guests or emulate other processor architectures. Cross-architecture emulation is slower than virtualization.
The linked download is the Mac DMG. Version 5.0.8 requires macOS 12 or later; the publisher identifies 4.7.5 as the last release supporting macOS 11. The free GitHub edition and paid Mac App Store edition have the same features, while the store edition adds automatic updates. This entry covers the Mac app, not UTM SE or UTM Remote for iOS.
Choose the guest system and virtualization backend with their requirements in mind. Running macOS guests requires Apple Silicon and macOS Monterey or later. Snapshot support also depends on the backend: QEMU VMs support snapshots on macOS, while Apple Virtualization VMs require macOS 27 for that feature. Windows 11 accelerated graphics use an experimental driver, and the publisher warns that game compatibility remains limited.
What it offers
- Run Windows, Linux, macOS and classic operating systems in virtual machines.
- Virtualize ARM64 operating systems on Apple Silicon or use QEMU to emulate other processor architectures.
- Manage virtual machines through a native Mac library and configuration interface.
- Save and restore snapshots; Apple Virtualization snapshots require macOS 27.
- Create, configure and control virtual machines using AppleScript or the utmctl command-line tool.
Good to know
- Cross-architecture emulation is slower than virtualization; Intel x86/x64 guests on Apple Silicon use emulation.
- Version 5.0.8 requires macOS 12 or later. macOS guest virtualization requires Apple Silicon, and some backend features require newer macOS versions.
- The Windows 11 accelerated graphics driver is experimental, with limited game compatibility.
