What is Oracle VirtualBox?
Oracle VirtualBox creates virtual machines that run alongside your Windows applications. It is useful for trying a Linux environment, maintaining a separate software configuration or investigating networking behavior without assigning each environment a physical computer. VirtualBox Manager provides graphical controls, while VBoxManage supports command-line management. Snapshots let you return a VM to an earlier state, and OVF import and export help move appliances between environments.
This download is the Windows host installer, not a Windows or Linux guest OS image. You supply the guest operating system; Guest Additions are installed inside a supported guest for integration features such as shared folders and clipboard sharing. The base package is GPLv3 software. The optional Extension Pack has separate license terms, including restrictions on commercial use under its personal and educational license.
What it offers
- Create and run multiple virtual machines alongside applications on the host computer.
- Take and restore VM snapshots when experimenting with software configurations.
- Import and export virtual appliances using Open Virtualization Format (OVF).
- Manage VMs with VirtualBox Manager or the VBoxManage command-line interface.
- Use shared folders and clipboard sharing with Guest Additions installed in supported guests.
Good to know
- VMs share the host computer's memory and disk space; available resources limit how many environments you can run.
- Windows 11 ARM host support is experimental. ARM hosts require ARM guest operating systems and cannot run x86 guests.
- The optional Extension Pack is separately licensed; its personal and educational license excludes commercial use.
