What is VisualGPSView?
VisualGPSView turns NMEA 0183 output into charts for checking a GPS receiver's signal and position data. Its satellite view identifies satellites by PRN, azimuth and elevation, while signal-to-noise bars help you compare the signals in view. Scatter and position plots show position samples and latitude, longitude and altitude averages.
The NMEA monitor displays incoming sentences, and recording and playback let you save NMEA text to a file or examine a previously recorded file. For live monitoring, the publisher requires a GPS receiver connected over RS-232 or USB with NMEA 0183 output. The documented sentence set covers GPGGA/GLGGA, GPGSA/GLGSA and GPGSV/GLGSV.
The publisher lists Windows 7 through Windows 10; Windows 11 compatibility is not confirmed by that requirements list. This is a receiver-analysis tool, not a primary navigation aid, and the publisher warns against operating it while driving.
What it offers
- Display GPS and GLONASS NMEA 0183 receiver data.
- View satellite PRNs, azimuth and elevation alongside signal-to-noise charts.
- Compare position samples in a scatter plot and monitor latitude, longitude and altitude averages.
- Read incoming NMEA sentences in the command monitor.
- Record NMEA data as ASCII text and play back saved NMEA files.
Good to know
- Live monitoring requires an RS-232 or USB GPS receiver with NMEA 0183 output.
- Publisher requirements list Windows 7 through Windows 10, not Windows 11.
- Not designed as a primary navigational aid; the publisher warns not to operate it while driving.
