What is VPKEdit?
VPKEdit is a pack-file editor for working with game assets. Open a Valve VPK to inspect its contents, extract selected files or add and remove entries in writable archives. It can also create a pack from scratch or from an existing folder, making it useful for assembling assets as well as examining an existing game package.
The graphical interface previews supported content without extracting it first, including text, images, Source 1 textures and Source 1 models. Text files inside writable packs can be edited in place. Support extends beyond Valve VPK: the 4.4.2 format table includes PAK, PCK, WAD and ZIP, but the available operations depend on the format. GCF, HOG and VPP are read-only, for example; opening an archive does not imply that VPKEdit can rebuild it.
This entry links to the Windows x64 standalone GUI ZIP for version 4.4.2, not an installer or the separate command-line archive. The publisher's installation guide requires the Visual C++ 2015–2022 x64 runtime. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 need the separate Compatibility GUI build rather than this download. Newer 5.0 beta releases are listed separately by the publisher; their features are not attributed to the linked 4.4.2 build. The accompanying publisher screenshot shows the older 4.0.0 interface, not a newly installed or tested copy.
What it offers
- Create Valve VPK archives from scratch or from an existing folder.
- Add or remove files and folders in writable pack formats, and extract entries from readable packs.
- Preview supported text, images, Source 1 textures and models without first extracting them.
- Edit text files directly inside writable archives.
- Work with additional pack formats including PAK, PCK, WAD and ZIP, subject to format-specific read/write support.
Good to know
- Read and write capabilities differ by format: GCF, HOG and VPP are read-only in the 4.4.2 format table.
- The linked standard GUI build is not the Compatibility build required for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1; the Visual C++ 2015–2022 x64 runtime is also required.
- The download is version 4.4.2; newer 5.0 beta releases exist and are not the package linked here.
