What is VSCodium?
VSCodium provides ready-built versions of Microsoft's open-source VS Code editor under the MIT license. It suits developers who want the familiar project-folder workflow, editor settings and command palette without Microsoft's branded binary distribution. The project says its builds disable Microsoft telemetry.
Extensions come from Open VSX by default, rather than the Visual Studio Marketplace. Check the availability and license of extensions your workflow needs before switching: some proprietary extensions and debugging tools are restricted to Microsoft's official VS Code build. VSCodium is not a guarantee of identical extension support.
The linked 1.143.17232 package is a DMG for Apple Silicon Macs. The publisher also supplies separate Intel Mac packages; the selected download is not an Intel or universal build. The publisher screenshot illustrates the editor interface, not a verified capture of this release.
What it offers
- Open project folders and work with source files in a VS Code-based editor.
- Use Quick Open, the command palette and configurable editor settings.
- Browse and install extensions from the default Open VSX registry.
- Use prebuilt MIT-licensed binaries with Microsoft telemetry disabled by the VSCodium project.
Good to know
- Open VSX does not contain every Visual Studio Marketplace extension; some proprietary extensions and debugging tools are restricted to the official VS Code build.
- This DMG is for Apple Silicon (ARM64), not Intel Macs. Minimum supported macOS version was not established from the sources used here.
