What is VSCodium?

VSCodium is a code editor for developers who want the familiar VS Code workflow in a community-built, freely licensed distribution. Open a project folder, navigate files with Quick Open, use the Command Palette and customize the editor through settings and extensions. The project builds binaries from Microsoft's VS Code source rather than distributing Microsoft's branded Visual Studio Code product.

Its extension gallery is Open VSX by default, not the Visual Studio Marketplace. Check the extensions your projects depend on before switching: some are missing from Open VSX, and some proprietary extensions and Microsoft debugging tools are restricted to the official Visual Studio Code build. VSCodium disables Microsoft's editor telemetry, but that is not a guarantee about data collection by independently installed extensions.

What it offers

  • Open project folders and navigate files with Quick Open.
  • Access editor commands through the Command Palette and customize settings and keyboard shortcuts.
  • Add editor capabilities through extensions from the default Open VSX Registry.
  • Use community-built, MIT-licensed VS Code binaries with Microsoft telemetry disabled.

Good to know

  • Open VSX does not contain every Visual Studio Marketplace extension; check availability before migrating a project.
  • Some proprietary extensions and Microsoft C# or Windows C++ debugging tools are restricted to the official Visual Studio Code build.
