What is Weasis?
Weasis opens medical imaging studies from local folders, DICOM discs and archives, or from configured PACS and DICOMweb services. Its viewing tools include measurements, annotations, multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) and 3D volume rendering. Local studies can be viewed offline after installation. A portal can launch the desktop app, but web launch still requires Weasis to be installed on the Mac.
The linked version 4.7.3 package is for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 12 or later. The publisher offers a separate Intel package for macOS 11 or later; neither build needs a separately installed Java runtime. On macOS, exporting a DICOM CD does not embed a runnable copy of the viewer.
The open-source distribution is not a certified medical device: it has no CE marking or FDA clearance. Primary diagnostic use requires the user or institution to ensure applicable regulatory compliance. Hiding identifiers in the viewer is not DICOM de-identification; exported DICOM files retain their original attributes.
What it offers
- Open local DICOM folders, DICOM CDs or DVDs and ZIP archives, including offline use after installation.
- Compare axial, coronal, sagittal and oblique views with synchronized MPR crosshairs.
- Measure distances and angles and annotate medical images.
- Query configured PACS nodes and use DICOMweb services for study workflows.
- View volumes in 3D on supported graphics hardware.
Good to know
- The open-source distribution is not a certified medical device and has no CE marking or FDA clearance; users or institutions are responsible for compliant primary diagnostic use.
- Hiding patient identifiers on screen does not de-identify exported DICOM files or automatically remove text burned into image pixels.
- Portal launch requires a local installation; this is not a browser-only viewer.
- macOS DICOM CD export cannot embed the viewer; that capability is limited to Windows x86-64.
