What is Zed?
Zed is a code editor for working on software projects alone or with other developers. It combines code editing with multiplayer collaboration and a debugger, and can connect to AI providers or external agents when you choose to use them. You can also disable AI features and use it as a conventional editor.
This entry links to the Apple Silicon macOS disk image for version 1.26.2. Intel Macs need the separate Intel build. The publisher lists macOS Catalina and Big Sur as only partially supported: collaboration screen sharing needs macOS 12 or newer. Check the documented Mac model requirements before choosing a package.
The Personal editor is free, but that does not make hosted AI or third-party model usage free. Zed offers paid plans, while using your own API keys follows the selected provider’s billing. The screenshot is an older source-gallery view of Zed on macOS, not a claim that every detail matches this release.
What it offers
- Edit source code in a desktop editor with language-server support.
- Collaborate with other developers through Zed’s multiplayer tools.
- Inspect nested variable values in debugger hovers.
- Connect AI providers or external agents, or disable AI features.
Good to know
- Collaboration screen sharing is unavailable on macOS 10.15 Catalina and macOS 11 Big Sur; it requires macOS 12 or newer.
- The linked DMG is for Apple Silicon; Intel Macs require the separate Intel package.
- Hosted AI and third-party model usage can incur charges even when using the free editor.
