What is Zettlr?

Zettlr brings Markdown writing, linked notes and publication tools into one desktop workspace. It suits researchers, journalists and writers who want to develop notes into longer documents while keeping their source material close to the text. Split views and full-text search help with navigating material across a writing project.

Citation support connects writing with reference-manager libraries, including Zotero. Pandoc-powered export profiles let you work with publication templates, while snippets provide reusable text structures. Note IDs, Wiki-style links, tags and a graph view support a Zettelkasten-style collection without requiring a separate page or app for each writing task.

The linked 4.9.0 package is for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13 or newer. Intel Macs need the separate Intel build on the publisher download page. If you are updating a much older installation, follow the publisher’s staged-update guidance rather than skipping releases that may migrate configuration. The screenshot is an older publisher-provided Mac interface illustration; it does not claim to show version 4.9.0.

What it offers

  • Write Markdown with adjustable in-place rendering and split-view editing.
  • Use citations and reference-manager integration, including Zotero.
  • Organize connected notes with IDs, Wiki-style links, tags and graph view.
  • Search across writing material with full-text search.
  • Reuse snippets and configure Pandoc-powered export profiles for publication templates.

Good to know

  • This Apple Silicon ARM64 package is not the Intel Mac build; macOS 13 or newer is required.
  • When updating an old installation, the publisher warns against skipping intermediate releases because configuration migrations may be required.
