What is Zettlr?

Zettlr brings Markdown writing, linked notes and publication tools into one workspace. It suits researchers, students and writers who want to build a collection of notes and turn it into a paper or manuscript. Reference-manager integration supports citation workflows, while tags, full-text search and internal links help organize the material behind a draft.

The editor offers in-place or WYSIWYG Markdown preview, split views and writing statistics. Pandoc-based export profiles let you prepare documents for different publication formats and templates rather than maintaining a separate draft for each output.

This download is the Windows x64 EXE installer for version 4.9.0. The publisher requires Windows 10 or newer and explicitly excludes 32-bit Windows and Windows on ARM. Existing users should check the setup guide before upgrading: the publisher warns that skipping intervening releases can miss configuration migrations. The gallery image illustrates Zettlr's cross-platform editor with macOS window controls; Windows window decorations can differ.

What it offers

  • Write Markdown with in-place or WYSIWYG preview and split-view editing.
  • Use reference-manager integration, citations and citation previews for research writing.
  • Organize notes with tags, internal Wiki-style links, note IDs and a graph view.
  • Find material with full-text search and track progress with writing statistics.
  • Export through Pandoc-supported formats and reusable publication profiles.

Good to know

  • Requires Windows 10 or newer on x64; the publisher does not support 32-bit Windows or Windows on ARM.
  • When upgrading an older installation, the publisher advises installing intervening releases in order because skipped configuration migrations can cause data corruption.
