What is Spybot – Search & Destroy?

Spybot – Search & Destroy Free Edition is a Windows anti-spyware tool for checking a PC for adware, tracking software, keyloggers and other unwanted programs. Its Start Center brings together system scanning, signature updates and immunization status. It is an on-demand cleanup tool, not a replacement for real-time antivirus protection: the publisher's edition comparison excludes antivirus, Live Protection, automatic signature updates and task scheduling from Free Edition.

The publisher's documented workflow is to update the detection signatures, open Scan System and review the results before using Fix Selected. Immunization is a separate action that blocks known unwanted entries, including through the Windows hosts file. If it interferes with a trusted website, the publisher documents an Undo Immunization option. Its rootkit scan needs particular care: a suspicious result is not necessarily malicious, and the publisher warns that deleting those items cannot be reversed through Quarantine.

This entry links to the publisher's installer allocator. Its HEAD response resolved to spybotsd-2.9.85.5.exe; no installer was downloaded or run. Softonic separately labels the application 3.4.0.0, while the publisher product page advertises Spybot 2.9. The exact current release remains inconsistent across these sources. The screenshot is the publisher's older Spybot 2.8 Free Edition Start Center illustration, not a capture of the linked installer. The publisher's current product text says Windows 7 and newer, but its lower compatibility list still includes XP; its support FAQ instead directs XP and Vista users to an older 2.4 installer.

What it offers

  • On-demand anti-spyware scanning for unwanted software such as adware, tracking software and keyloggers.
  • Start Center access to system scans, signature updates and immunization status.
  • System Immunization blocks known unwanted entries; an Undo Immunization option is documented.
  • Startup Tools and Rootkit Scan are included in the publisher's Free Edition comparison.

Good to know

  • Free Edition does not include antivirus, real-time Live Protection, automatic signature updates or task scheduling.
  • Rootkit Scan can flag legitimate software; the publisher warns that deleting these findings is not reversible through Quarantine.
  • Sources disagree on the release: Softonic lists 3.4.0.0, the publisher advertises 2.9, and the checked allocator resolved to a filename labeled 2.9.85.5. No latest-version claim is made.
  • Legacy Windows guidance conflicts on the product page. The support FAQ directs XP and Vista users to Spybot 2.4 rather than the linked installer.
